NSABP B-32 — Sentinel-Lymph-Node Resection Versus Conventional Axillary Dissection in Node-Negative Breast Cancer

Phase 3 · 2010 · Breast Cancer

Design

Randomized sentinel lymph node biopsy plus immediate axillary dissection vs sentinel node biopsy alone (axillary dissection only if node positive).

Population

Clinically node-negative operable breast cancer.

Primary Endpoint

overall survival, disease-free survival, and regional control

Key Result

No difference in survival or regional control between arms, with markedly less arm morbidity when sentinel node was negative.

Guideline Impact

Standard-of-care basis for sentinel node biopsy in NCCN and ASCO axillary guidelines
